이 음반은 울산을 중심으로 한 설화와 풍경, 도시의 정서를 음악으로 풀어내며, 가야금과 첼로, 국악적 리듬과 현대적 화성, 깊은 서정성과 공간감을 통해 전통과 현대, 자연과 도시를 잇는 감각적인 사운드를 만들어냅니다.

1. 율리곡

울산의 대표 설화 ‘처용설화’를 모티브로 한 창작 연주곡.

가야금과 첼로가 춤의 동작을 형상화하며, 설화의 몽환성과 서정을 담아낸다.

2. 하늬바람

태화강 십리대숲을 스치는 남풍의 잔잔한 움직임을 담은 곡.

자연의 숨결을 섬세한 가야금 선율로 표현하였다.

3. 돌의 기억

수천 년 전 반구대 암각화에 새겨진 삶의 흔적을 음악으로 풀어낸 곡.

고요한 선율 속에 시간의 층위를 담아낸다.

4. 별궤적

공업단지의 밤, 불빛과 별빛이 어우러진 도시의 낭만에서 영감을 받은 곡.

차가운 산업 이미지와 따뜻한 인간의 감성을 대비시켜 표현하였다.

Jeong Jeong-yoon – Gayageum Story Vol.1: Romance of Ulsan

“Telling the story of Ulsan through the voice of the gayageum.”

Gayageum Story Vol.1: Romance of Ulsan is the debut creative album by Korean gayageum soloist Jeong Jeong-yoon, presenting a unique musical journey that blends traditional Korean sounds with regional narratives and contemporary sensibility.

Rooted in the city of Ulsan, the album reinterprets local folklore, landscapes, and urban emotion—such as the legend of Cheoyong, the Bangudae petroglyphs, the Taehwagang bamboo forest, and the industrial glow of the city at night—through the expressive sound of the gayageum and modern compositional techniques.

With a delicate fusion of gayageum and cello, and the interaction of traditional rhythms and modern harmonies, this album creates a rich and emotive soundscape that bridges the past and present, nature and industry, the local and the universal.

1. Yulli-gok

Inspired by the traditional legend of Cheoyong from Ulsan, this track imagines his dance through music. The cello represents hand gestures, while the gayageum portrays intricate footwork, evoking a dreamy and lyrical interpretation of the myth.

2. Westerly

Depicting the gentle breeze passing through the bamboo grove of the Taehwagang River, this piece expresses the subtle breath of nature and its harmony with humanity through refined gayageum playing.

3. Reminiscence of the stone

A tribute to the ancient Bangudae petroglyphs, this meditative track conveys the quiet pulse of prehistoric life, blending traditional instrumentation with a modern compositional approach.

4. Star Trajectory

Inspired by the contrast between the coldness of Ulsan’s industrial nightscape and the warm dreams of its laborers. The glowing city lights and stars above are reimagined in a romantic and emotional musical form.

This album is more than just a fusion of tradition and modernity—it is an artistic reflection of a city, a cultural narrative, and a new exploration of gayageum’s possibilities as a solo instrument in contemporary music.

(국문해설) 울산의 대표 설화 ‘처용설화’를 모티프로 한 창작 연주곡인 율리곡은 전통의 리듬과 선율을 현대적 감성으로 재해석한 곡으로, 처용이 설화 속 춤을 췄던 동작을 상상하며 첼로의 활을 손동작, 가야금은 발재간을 묘사하였다. 가야금과 첼로의 깊고 섬세한 음색으로 설화의 몽환성과 서정을 담아낸다.

(영문해설) Inspired by Cheoyong, a legendary figure from Ulsan’s most iconic folktale, Yulligok* is a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional Korean rhythms and melodies. Envisioning the dance Cheoyong performed in the tale, the piece portrays his graceful hand gestures through the bowing of the cello and his nimble footwork through the plucking of the gayageum. The rich, delicate tones of both instruments weave together to evoke the dreamlike and poetic atmosphere of the myth.

(“Gok” is a term commonly used in translations of Korean traditional music titles.)

(국문해설) 남쪽에서 불어오는 바람을 뜻하는 ‘하늬바람’은 울산 태화강 십리대숲을 스쳐 지나는 바람결처럼 잔잔하고 유려하다. 자연 속에서 느낀 바람의 숨결과 대숲의 파동을 담아, 자연과 인간의 조화로움을 가야금의 섬세한 터치로 표현했다. 

(영문해설)  Named after the gentle southern wind, Hannibaram flows with the grace of a breeze brushing through the bamboo forest along Ulsan’s Taehwa River. Inspired by the breath of wind and the subtle waves within nature, the piece delicately expresses the harmony between nature and humanity through the nuanced touch of the gayageum.

(국문해설) 수천 년 전 바위에 새겨진 삶의 흔적, 반구대 암각화는 지금도 강가의 돌 위에서 조용히 시간을 이야기한다. 이 곡은 고요한 선율 속에 선사인의 숨결을 담고 있으며, 전통 국악기의 음색과 현대적 작곡 기법이 어우러져 과거와 현재를 잇는 시간의 교차로를 음악으로 형상화했다.

(영문해설) Carved into ancient rocks along the Bangucheon Stream thousands of years ago, these petroglyphs silently tell stories of a distant past. This composition brings their echoes to life, blending the serene melodies of traditional Korean instruments with modern musical expression. Through this fusion, it creates a bridge between prehistoric times and the present, inviting listeners to experience the timeless spirit of the region.

(국문해설) 울산의 공장지대에서 피어나는 야경의 불빛과 별빛의 흐름에서 영감을 받았다. 도시의 산업적 이미지가 갖는 차가움과 대비되는 열정적으로 일하는 산업 노동자의 꿈과 낭만을 발견, 음악적으로 그려내고자 하였다. 불빛으로 수놓인 공단의 밤이 낭만으로 피어나는 순간, 도시의 또 다른 아름다움을 마주하게 된다. 이 곡은 단순한 퓨전이 아닌, 전통과 현대의 조화 속에서 울산의 고유한 감성과 가능성을 탐색하는 음악적 여정이다.

(영문해설) Inspired by the flow of city lights and starlight blooming over Ulsan’s industrial district at night, this piece uncovers the passion and dreams of hardworking industrial workers amidst the cold, mechanical image of the city. It musically portrays the moment when the factory-lit night blossoms into romance, revealing a new and unexpected beauty within the urban landscape. Far from a simple fusion, this composition embarks on a musical journey exploring the unique spirit and potential of Ulsan through the harmony of tradition and modernity.
